The Forward Deployed Engineer job market, by the numbers

The Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) is one of the fastest-growing and best-paid roles in tech right now, but nobody had actually counted the market. So we did. We pulled every open FDE role we could find from public job boards and analyzed the lot.

The result: 391 open roles across 13 companies, paying a median of $185K to $300K and topping out at $445K plus equity. Here is what the data says about who is hiring, what they pay, where the jobs are, and what the interviews actually test. Since our undefined census the open-role count has grown from 394 to 391, up -1% in a month.

Key facts: the FDE job market (November 2026)

  • Rung's November 2026 census found 391 open Forward Deployed Engineer roles across 13 companies on public job boards.
  • Among the 27 FDE roles disclosing US pay bands, median total compensation ran $185K to $300K, topping out around $445K plus equity.
  • Databricks (113), Palantir (106), Salesforce (94) together held 313 of the 391 open FDE roles.
  • 99% of FDE job descriptions emphasize customer-facing work, 81% APIs and integrations, and 80% Python.
  • The same job is posted under four title families: Forward Deployed Engineer, Deployment Strategist, Forward Deployed Software Engineer, AI / Deployment Engineer.

Who is hiring forward deployed engineers

Three companies account for 313 of the 391 open roles. Databricks currently leads with 113 openings, ahead of Palantir (106) and Salesforce (94). Palantir coined the title and still posts many of these roles as "Deployment Strategist."

What forward deployed engineers get paid

Of the 27 roles that disclosed a US pay band, the median ran $185K to $300K, with the top reaching $445K plus equity and a floor around $132K. That is senior-software-engineer compensation for a role many engineers have never heard of. International postings and most of Palantir's roles did not publish bands, so the true market is likely even broader.

Where the jobs are

Around 42% of the roles are in the United States, but this is a genuinely global role, with strong demand in the UK, Australia, Japan, and South Korea. Roughly 19% are flagged remote-friendly.

The role has an identity crisis

The single most useful thing to know if you are job hunting: the same job goes by at least four different names. If you only search "Forward Deployed Engineer," you miss Palantir's 68 "Deployment Strategist" openings and OpenAI's "AI Deployment Engineer" roles entirely. Search all of them.

What the interviews actually test

Here is where the job descriptions get interesting. Almost every posting (99%) emphasizes customer-facing work, alongside Python, integrations, cloud platforms, and a real amount of travel. Algorithm-style questions barely appear at all: what these roles keep asking for is the ability to connect to somebody else's systems and keep data moving through them.

Two things worth checking before you apply

29% of postings require a US security clearance. That share of the market is closed to anyone who is not a US person, regardless of how strong the rest of the application is. It is worth knowing before you invest weeks in preparing for it.

81% mention travel or on-site work. Forward deployed means deployed: a large share of these roles expect you in a customer's office, often around 25% of the time. If you are looking for fully remote, the reachable slice of this market is a good deal smaller than the headline count suggests.

That is the trap. The job descriptions sell the breadth, but the interview loops test the depth. Every FDE loop we have seen still puts you through live coding and SQL under time pressure, plus an open-ended customer case. The description tells you the job; the loop tests the fundamentals it never spelled out.

Who this role is for

52% of the open roles are mid-level or individual-contributor, not staff or principal. If you are an engineer who genuinely enjoys customer contact as much as writing code, the FDE path is one of the rare, high-paying roles that rewards both, and you do not need to be a 15-year veteran to break in.

The interviews test live coding, SQL, and the open-ended customer case. Rung lets you practice all three, free to start.

Methodology

We pulled open roles from the public ATS job boards (Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby, and Workday) of 13 companies known to hire forward deployed engineers, in November 2026. We matched on title (forward deployed, FDE, deployment strategist, AI deployment engineer) and removed duplicates and non-technical roles. The skills breakdown is computed over the 297 postings whose full description we could fetch, not all 391: some boards return a listing without description text, and counting those as though they mentioned nothing would understate every skill. Compensation reflects the 27 roles that disclosed a US pay band. This is a point-in-time snapshot; the market moves week to week.
