GTM Engineer + Forward Deployed

Your Spoonfed Roadmap

Ankit Vishwakarma · Senior Software Engineer (APM/Observability), illumifin

The certificate is a credibility amplifier, not the hiring trigger. Proof-of-work is the hiring trigger.

Run three tracks in parallel. A fourth kicks in from Month 2.

The Strategic Reality

Four corrections to the plan you came in with. Read these before anything else.

AIP-C01 is real but brutal.

Professional-level, Bedrock/RAG/agents/evals-heavy. Assumes ~1 year hands-on GenAI plus solid AWS foundations. Do not start here. Foundation first (AWS AI Practitioner), then this.

GTM Eng ≠ FDE — not equally reachable.

GTM Eng leverages your existing automation background and is the near-term play. FDE is the stretch — mostly US-based, hybrid, up to 50% travel. From India, frontier-lab FDE is aspirational; target the realistic FDE-adjacent market.

Your edge: a hidden FDE feeder profile.

Cloud/ops engineers who self-taught the LLM stack and shipped internal AI tooling are a recognized-but-under-recruited FDE pool. They get filtered at the keyword stage. You already build agentic tooling. Your problem is positioning, not capability.

The PDFs: sound method, inflated numbers.

"Build something real and send it" works. "8x salary / 100% close" are survivorship claims from a sample of three. Use the tactic; calibrate the expectations.

The single non-negotiable technical skill for 2026: evaluation engineering — building eval suites that catch hallucinations, regressions, and grounding gaps before production. Your SRE instinct ("how do I know this works in prod?") is a real, rare advantage here.

Two Roles. Two Timelines.

GTM Eng and FDE require the same underlying skills but sit on different time horizons. Here's where you stand.

GTM Engineer

2–3 months

Clay · n8n/Make · HubSpot/Salesforce · Python · RAG-lite enrichment

Forward Deployed Engineer

The "rare triangle"

Track A

The Certification Path

Sequenced deliberately. Do not go straight to AIP-C01 — build the ladder first.

AWS Certified AI Practitioner

AIF-C01

Foundation in AWS AI/ML + GenAI. Covers Bedrock Agents, Model Evaluation, Guardrails, Prompt Management — doubles as AIP-C01 prep.

→ Book the exam NOW. The booked deadline is the whole point.

ML Engineer Associate or SA Associate

Optional

AIP-C01 assumes solid AWS architecture knowledge. One Associate closes that gap. Pick ML Engineer Assoc for AI lean; SA Assoc for broader cloud credibility.

→ Use your 50% discount voucher from passing Step 1.

AWS Certified GenAI Developer – Professional

AIP-C01

The career target. Tests when to use a non-deterministic LLM vs. a deterministic Lambda/Step Function — exactly what FDE interviews test. Your Track B projects are your best prep.

→ This exam rewards real building over memorization.

Track B

The Build Track

This is what gets you hired. The cert proves breadth; the builds prove you. Each project sits at the intersection of your domain and FDE/GTM skills.

14-Week Sprint (Weeks 2–14)

GTM Enrichment + Eval Pipeline

A Clay table + n8n workflow: company list → enrich decision-makers → Claygent recent-news signals → AI personalization column → eval column that scores each generated opener for relevance and accuracy.

The Eval Layer

Score each AI-generated opener for relevance (does it reference real company news?) and accuracy (no hallucinated facts?). A simple rubric + Claude API call is enough.

  • 3-min Loom walkthrough of the full pipeline
  • Short writeup: 'Why I added an eval layer to outbound'

Incident Triage / RCA Copilot

Agentic system: ingest logs/traces/alerts (Datadog-style data you know cold) → retrieve similar past incidents via RAG → propose ranked root-cause hypotheses with cited evidence → eval suite measuring hypothesis accuracy + guardrail against hallucinated causes.

The Eval Layer

Eval suite: given a known-root-cause incident, does the system rank the correct hypothesis first? Measure precision@1 across 20 synthetic incidents. Guardrail flags low-confidence answers instead of hallucinating certainty.

  • GitHub repo with README + architecture diagram
  • Loom demo: walk through a real incident triage
  • Writeup on the eval methodology and what it caught

Insurance Document Q&A Agent with Guardrails

Document-extraction + Q&A agent over insurance-style docs (policies, claims forms — synthetic/public samples only, never real client data). RAG + structured extraction + Bedrock Guardrails for PII/safety + evals for answer grounding.

The Eval Layer

Grounding eval: for each answer, verify every cited clause exists verbatim in the source document. Hallucination rate < 5% is the target. PII guardrail refuses to surface detected personal identifiers.

  • GitHub repo + demo recording
  • One-pager: 'How I'd ship this into an insurer's environment in 90 days'
  • Eval report showing grounding rate + guardrail effectiveness

The Spoonfed Sequence

Month-by-month across all four tracks. Certify, Build, Position, and Outreach run together — the build leads.

Book + prep AI Practitioner

Project 1: GTM Enrichment + Eval Pipeline

Draft GTM/FDE resume; start LinkedIn rewrite

—

Pass AI Practitioner (~Wk 6); start Bedrock hands-on

Project 2 begins: Incident/RCA Copilot

Publish LinkedIn rewrite; pin Project 1; first build post

Identify first 5 targets; send 2–3 DMs

Associate prep / Bedrock labs

Finish Project 2; publish repo + Loom

Pin Project 2; second build post

3–5 active targets; one follow-up each; start interview prep

Pass Associate; start AIP-C01 prep

Project 3 begins: Insurance Document Agent

Pin Project 3; third build post

Keep outreach cadence; begin live interviews if any

AIP-C01 deep prep + practice exams (aim 85%+)

Finish/polish Project 3; tidy all repos

Refresh resume with new certs + projects

Full outreach + interview loops; decomposition/roleplay drills

Pass AIP-C01

Iterate on highest-interest project

Add AIP-C01 to LinkedIn/resume; 'builder' narrative complete

Convert interviews → offers; negotiate

Realistic outcome by Month 6

AI Practitioner + (optional Associate) + AIP-C01 done. Three portfolio projects live. A "builder, not applicant" public profile. Active interview pipeline — most likely landing first in GTM-Eng / applied-AI / GCC territory, with FDE-proper as a Month 9–12 target.

Don't start with the cert.

Start Project 1 and book the AI Practitioner exam. The booked exam creates a deadline; Project 1 creates your first piece of proof and your first LinkedIn build post. Certify, Build, Position run together — but the build is what makes you hireable, so it leads.

The difference between you and thousands reading the same PDFs: they'll tweak their resume. You'll ship something, add an eval layer nobody else thinks of, and send it. That's the whole game.
