Forward Deployed Engineer Interview Experience
The coding round explicitly let me use AI, but they were not looking for a one-shot prompt. They were judging whether I could break the work down, catch the model when it went sideways, and run my own review loop while still shipping.
Interview process
This was a really quick process for me: recruiter chat, two technical phone screens, then four final-round interviews. The early rounds covered broad web-dev fundamentals, debugging, and a small API-to-UI coding task that later got expanded in the onsite. The final loop felt more performative than most because there was clearly a hidden rubric beyond just solving the prompt, especially around communication, customer instincts, and how I use AI while coding. The coding round explicitly allowed AI, but they seemed to care much more about whether I could break work down, steer the model, and review it critically than whether I could one-shot a solution. The behavioral side also cared a lot about why Stripe and whether I really wanted a customer-facing role like this.

Overview
I started with a pretty standard recruiter chat, but even there they were probing for how client-facing I really was and whether my interests lined up with the role.
Question types asked
Specific questions asked
What did you work on at your last startup?
What are your interests going forward?
How much time did you spend with clients?
What percentage of your work was client-facing versus internal?
I walked through what I had built in my last startup, then talked about what I wanted next. They also wanted a pretty concrete read on how customer-facing I was, so I explained how much time I spent with clients versus internal work and what that mix actually looked like.

“The difficulty was not in the technical, but in the behavioral questions. It seemed like there was a hidden rubric beyond the basics of getting things done that were not necessarily apparent at first glance. Perhaps the role of the FDE is to take in social cues and have an instinct with human interaction that they're judging for here. It seems like they really deeply care about why you want to join the company and the team. It's not really something you can cosplay because they will drill you with different questions from multiple interviewers. I love Stripe as a product isn't going to suffice. Perhaps read their blogs and other online resources about the company culture. They seem to highly value people who work autonomously to scope, design, implement, and deploy solutions while also doing a bit of project management for the parts of projects that do require more resources.”

“The process was smooth, and the HR team was friendly. During the behavioral interview, the interviewer asked me two main questions and then followed up with additional questions based on my answers.”

“The most awkward part was they kept questioning my ability to analyze data, and I had actually initiated and been a big part of the migration from Microsoft to analyze data, so it felt really strange.”
