On Tuesday (6/30), AWS announced the establishment of a dedicated Forward Deployed Engineering (FDE) organization, and will invest US$1 billion in internal resources to expand its AI deployment services, dispatching thousands of AI engineers to embed within enterprise customers to jointly develop and deploy agentic AI systems, joining OpenAI and Anthropic in building out FDE services.
The FDE model originated at Palantir and refers to vendors dispatching engineers to work directly inside customer organizations, collaborating with customer teams to clarify requirements, integrate data, and tune systems, so that technology can truly land in existing workflows and operational scenarios. The AWS FDE model has three key features: adopting an "Agentic-First" approach, shortening AI deployment timelines from months to days, and enabling customers to independently operate their AI systems after project completion rather than remaining dependent on AWS.
AWS explained that most FDE engineers were originally developers of AWS AI services, and will work with customers' business, engineering, and information security teams to build and deploy production-ready AI systems using customers' own data, governance frameworks, and processes. In addition, unlike traditional consulting firms that only provide assessments and recommendations and treat each project as an independent engagement, AWS FDE adopts a long-term partnership model driven by shared business goals and outcomes rather than billing by the hour.
AWS FDE uses Agentic Deployment Technology and incorporates an AI-Driven Development Lifecycle, allowing AI agents to participate in every stage of software development, while human engineers oversee, verify, and guide the process.
The ultimate goal of AWS FDE is to build customer self-sufficiency, enabling customer engineers to progressively move from observers to co-developers, and finally to managers capable of independently operating AI systems. Upon project completion, customers will receive the fully deployed AI system, a Knowledge Graph, operations manuals, system architecture documentation, and internally trained AI seed talent.
AWS FDE engineers have already embedded at multiple enterprises, including the Allen Institute, Cox Automotive, the National Basketball Association (NBA), the National Football League (NFL), Japan's Ricoh, and Southwest Airlines.
