Big tech companies are preparing to push forward with large-scale AI deployment
They are racing to recruit FDEs stationed on-site at customers
Rebuilding and optimizing corporate information networks for AI

Because artificial intelligence (AI) has outstanding programming capabilities, demand for software engineers at big tech companies is declining. Yet Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic—the three major AI companies—are doing the opposite, waging a talent war over "Forward Deployed Engineers (FDE)." The FDE is a brand-new programming role born in the AI era: these experts are stationed inside client companies' buildings, dedicated to solving AI-related problems.

AI Cools Demand for Programmers… FDE Hiring Surges 8-Fold

On the 12th of this month (local time), Google announced it would create a new FDE team within its cloud division. Going forward, they will be responsible for connecting Google's AI products with various enterprises. Two days before Google's announcement, OpenAI also announced the establishment of a new subsidiary called "OpenAI Deployment Company." Personnel at this company are OpenAI's FDEs, providing other businesses with conversational bot systems including ChatGPT. Anthropic, meanwhile, had already released an aggressive investment plan last November, announcing it would expand its FDE headcount fivefold.

The FDE, also known as a forward deployed engineer or on-site engineer, is currently one of the hottest roles in the IT industry. According to data from the US job platform Indeed, from January to September of last year, FDE job postings in the US surged 800% year-over-year. This stands in stark contrast to the trend of IT companies cutting programmer hiring amid aggressive AI investment and operational efficiency strategies.

Stationed On-Site with Clients, Building Computing Environments Best Suited for AI

An FDE is an engineer who is stationed directly inside a client company's building to address the client's needs. Just as military forces deployed near the front lines are called "forward deployed units," FDEs are personnel sent to the very front lines of a business. OpenAI describes the FDE in its blog as follows: "They must be able to work closely with client teams on-site, identify the areas where AI can have the greatest impact, and redesign the organization's infrastructure and core workflows accordingly to make them AI-ready."

The FDE role reflects the maturing of the AI industry. AI is currently moving from the research and development stage to the large-scale deployment stage. "Agent AI" will be embedded inside computer networks to automate various tasks. However, most companies' network environments remain unsuitable for AI: it is common to find data in disarray, weak cybersecurity, or server infrastructure not built for AI to run on. FDEs go directly into client companies and "tear down and rebuild" their information systems to ensure that these AI technologies, which cost astronomical sums, can deliver maximum performance.

Palantir Is the Originator… But Some Question Whether It's "Just Consulting"

The originator of the FDE model is the US defense tech company Palantir. Because the company works with intelligence agencies and the military, its business nature requires extremely strict security measures. However, the FDE model did not stop at mere security considerations—it also earned high commercial acclaim and drove Palantir's growth. Today, this business model has spread from Palantir to big tech companies and the entire AI industry. In South Korea, LG CNS also stated at an earnings call this past April that it would cultivate FDE talent through its partnership with Palantir.

That said, some are skeptical about the sustainability of the FDE boom. Deploying unfamiliar IT systems according to client needs has traditionally been the core business of consulting firms and system integration (SI) service providers, and questions are being raised about whether big tech companies are now taking away their jobs.

Maria Gina Kuna, a US IT consultant and author, pointed out in her newsletter: "The FDE is simply a consulting job under a different name. AI platforms may still be unfamiliar for now, but as the technology advances further, anyone will be able to easily adopt such platforms." She continued: "When that time comes, engineers will no longer be treated as all-purpose 'handymen,' and the huge bonuses currently being dangled in front of them will also return to normal levels."
