Last updated : added a section matching program types to your background

Judge an FDE bootcamp, course, or coaching program by whether it rehearses the rounds FDE hiring uses, whether you ship a deployment artifact with evals and human fallback, and whether someone who has done FDE work reviews your builds. Rankings and certificates do not answer those questions.

What this checklist is for

You are comparing programs while trying to become a Forward Deployed Engineer, or sending an engineer into one. Ask every program the same checkable questions, including FDE Dispatch. This page does not rank programs, name competitors, or declare a winner.

Use the FDE interview loop field guide and the practice questions bank to see what each round looks like before you buy.

Does the curriculum cover FDE-specific interview rounds?

Ask the program. Which FDE round types do you rehearse by name, and how do you rehearse them?

What a good answer looks like. Named practice on customer problem decomposition, a deployment deep dive, customer-scenario system design, a work trial with a customer-facing presentation, and a deployment retrospective. The syllabus names the round, the time box, and the artifact you produce.

Why it matters for FDE loops. FDE hiring uses these rounds on top of generic screens. Candidates who only practiced coding puzzles walk into the loop unprepared. The interview loop overview maps the full sequence.

Do you ship a deployment artifact for a real or realistic customer?

Ask the program. What do I ship by the end, who uses it, and how is it evaluated?

What a good answer looks like. You own a production deployment or a production-like build for a real organization or a realistic customer environment. The deliverables include an evaluation suite, a designed human fallback, and a write-up that reads like a field report.

Why it matters for FDE loops. Work trials and retrospectives ask for one concrete deployment story: problem, number, scope, design, what broke, result. Lecture projects with no user leave you with nothing to tell.

Who reviews your builds?

Ask the program. Who grades my work, on what rubric, and have those coaches done Forward Deployed Engineer work?

What a good answer looks like. Feedback lands on the builds you ship: scoping brief, design, evals, fallbacks, and the customer presentation. Coaches are practicing Forward Deployed Engineers, and they say how review works week by week.

Why it matters for FDE loops. Generic software-engineering feedback scores code elegance. FDE loops score customer judgment, cuts, and what you tell the stakeholder when the system fails.

Comparing programs? Ask each one the same questions on this page.

Does it teach discovery and scoping with a stakeholder?

Ask the program. How do I practice discovery and write a scoping brief with a real or simulated stakeholder?

What a good answer looks like. You interview people who feel the pain, write how the process works today and what metric would prove a fix, and defend scope cuts when the stakeholder changes a constraint. Role-play alone is weaker than discovery tied to a build you then ship.

Why it matters for FDE loops. Decomposition and stakeholder rounds reward discovery first. Candidates who jump to architecture before the process is clear lose those rounds. The path in how to become an FDE starts with that fieldwork.

Does it distinguish FDE from solutions engineer and sales engineer?

Ask the program. How do you separate Forward Deployed Engineer work from solutions engineer and sales engineer work?

What a good answer looks like. Clear ownership lines: the FDE owns the build, the measured result after launch, and the eval and fallback design. Solutions and sales engineering own adoption, demos, and deal support. The curriculum trains the build-side gap. See FDE vs. solutions engineer and the job titles guide for how employers name the split.

Why it matters for FDE loops. Hiring teams reject candidates who describe demo and configuration work as production ownership. If the program blurs the roles, you rehearse the wrong story.

Is the time commitment stated in hours?

Ask the program. How many hours per week, how many total guided hours, and how does that sit next to a full-time job?

What a good answer looks like. Plain numbers: hours per week and total instructor-guided hours, plus how sessions are scheduled. Employer sponsors need those numbers for approval.

Why it matters for FDE loops. FDE preparation is fieldwork and a build, which take calendar time. A program that hides hours forces you to discover the load after you have paid.

Which kind of program fits your background

Match the format to the gap your background leaves open. Free self-study with this site's guides is enough when you can find a real customer deployment and rehearse FDE interview rounds on your own. Choose a structured course when you need named round practice, and one-to-one coaching on a shipped build when you need a live organization and coach review.

Ground the choice in the role splits on Forward Deployed Engineer vs. software engineer and FDE vs. solutions engineer, the title variants on FDE job titles, and the skills requirements index (563 live engineer-title postings at 115 employers: Python 76.2%, customer-facing work 74.1%, APIs or integrations 69.8%, travel 58.8%, median first stated experience 5 years). Program facts on this page for the coaching format: twelve weeks, six to eight hours per week, about ninety instructor-guided hours, one-to-one around a live deployment for a real organization, with interview practice alongside.

If your background isGap to closeFormat that fits
Backend or full-stack software engineerCustomer discovery, customer-facing delivery, travel readiness, and the FDE-specific rounds software engineer loops leave out: decomposition, customer-scenario system design, work trial, and deployment retrospective. Both seats write production code; the FDE seat is measured on a customer outcome.Free self-study with this site's guides is enough when you can ship one measured customer deployment and rehearse those rounds from the field guide and practice questions. A structured course fits when you need scheduled round rehearsal. One-to-one coaching on a shipped build fits when you need a live organization and coaches who review the builds you ship.
Solutions or sales engineerProduction build ownership: designing, coding, evaluating, and deploying the system, then owning evals, monitoring, and fallbacks after launch. You already have customer discovery and technical credibility; demos and configuration do not count as that ownership.Free self-study is enough when you can own one production deployment end to end on your own, using the role split and the how-to-become path on this site. You do not need a bootcamp for role clarity alone. One-to-one coaching on a shipped build fits when you need coaches grading the build you have never owned. A structured course fits when you need build and round practice without a live customer org attached.
Data or ML engineerCustomer-facing discovery and delivery (74.1% of postings), APIs or integrations into the customer's stack (69.8%), and a production deployment with an evaluation suite and human fallback. Python strength (76.2% of postings) covers part of the skill set; the customer seat and integration ownership are the rest.Free self-study with this site's guides is enough when you can run discovery, integrate into a real stack, and write up a measured result. A structured course fits when you need rehearsal of customer-constrained design and presentation rounds. One-to-one coaching on a shipped build fits when you need a live organization and coach review on that deployment.
Under about two years of experienceThe experience floor employers state on live postings. Where a posting states years, the median first stated figure is 5 years; title-page floors run from 3+ years upward. You also need one measured customer deployment story before FDE loops score you.Free self-study comes first: ship one measured deployment and rehearse rounds with the site's guides before you pay for a program. A structured course or one-to-one coaching on a shipped build fits once that deployment is underway. Paid formats do not erase the experience floors employers post.

Red flags

  • Job guarantees. No training program controls an employer's hiring decision. A guarantee is a sales claim. It tells you nothing about FDE readiness.
  • Unsourced placement stats. Ask for the cohort size, the definition of "placed," and the time window. Figures without that context are uncheckable.
  • Countdown timers and fake scarcity. Seats that expire on a clock are marketing. Coach calendar capacity is operational; countdown banners are not.
  • Generic software-engineering content relabeled FDE. If the syllabus is leetcode, product craft, or cloud certs with "FDE" in the title, the FDE-specific rounds stay unrehearsed.
  • Certificates presented as hiring signals. A certificate can document syllabus and hours for an employer sponsor. It does not replace a deployment story in an FDE loop.

How FDE Dispatch answers these questions

Apply the same checklist to FDE Dispatch. The facts below are the ones published on the program pages.

  • Rounds. An interview track runs alongside the build track. Participants rehearse FDE interview practice with feedback on recorded sessions.
  • Deployment. The program centers on a live AI deployment for a real organization. Deliverables include discovery field notes, a scoped brief and design doc, an evaluation suite and results, and a written case study.
  • Review. Coaching is one-to-one with practicing Forward Deployed Engineers. Coaches review everything participants ship and grade builds against a rubric.
  • Discovery. Soft skills and discovery are a dedicated three-week phase before the full deployment phase.
  • Role clarity. The program is for working engineers moving into Forward Deployed Engineer roles, including solutions and sales engineers who know the customer and have never owned the build.
  • Hours. Twelve weeks, six to eight hours per week, about ninety instructor-guided hours, scheduled around a job.
  • Certificate. A certificate of completion is issued when all program deliverables are done, with the syllabus and hours behind it. FDE Dispatch does not present that certificate as a hiring signal, and does not offer job guarantees.

Questions people ask

What should I ask before joining an FDE training program?

Ask which FDE interview rounds they rehearse, what deployment artifact you ship and who uses it, who reviews your builds and whether those coaches have done FDE work, how you practice discovery with a stakeholder, how the program separates FDE from solutions and sales engineering, and the hours per week plus total guided hours.

How is an FDE program different from a software engineering bootcamp?

An FDE program trains discovery, scoping with a stakeholder, customer-constrained system design, evaluation suites, human fallback, and the presentation and retrospective rounds used in FDE hiring. A software engineering bootcamp that relabels generic coding or product work as FDE leaves those rounds unpracticed.

Does FDE Dispatch guarantee a job after the program?

No. FDE Dispatch does not offer job guarantees. The program is twelve weeks of one-to-one coaching around a live deployment for a real organization, with interview practice alongside, and a certificate of completion when deliverables are done.

Which kind of FDE program fits my background?

Match the format to the gap your background leaves open. Free self-study with this site's guides is enough when you can find a real customer deployment and rehearse FDE interview rounds on your own. Choose a structured course when you need named round practice, and one-to-one coaching on a shipped build when you need a live organization and coach review. Backend and full-stack software engineers close customer discovery, customer-facing delivery, and FDE-specific rounds; solutions and sales engineers close production build ownership; data and ML engineers close customer-facing integration and deployment ownership; engineers under about two years of experience close the experience floor employers state on live postings, where the median first stated figure is 5 years across 563 engineer-title FDE postings at 115 employers.
