FDE: The "Treasure Job" of the AI Era — Even Beginner Programmers Can Save This Guide on How to Transition!
·
This article introduces FDE (Forward Deployed Engineer), an emerging AI role with surging demand and generous compensation. FDEs are the key link between large AI models and specific business scenarios, requiring technical skills, product thinking, and communication abilities to turn AI technology into real enterprise productivity. The role suits engineers and product managers with ToB experience, product thinking, and strong communication skills looking to transition. FDE is an important career development direction in the AI era, with broad market prospects.
Recently, one job in the AI world has been on fire.
In early 2026, LinkedIn released a report saying that hiring for this role grew 42-fold over the past two years. What does that mean? AI engineer roles grew only 13-fold over the same period.
It's called FDE — Forward Deployed Engineer.
ByteDance is hiring, Tencent is hiring, and so is Zhipu. Earlier this year, Shanghai even launched the first FDE-focused training program in the country.

But what does this job actually involve? Why is it suddenly so hot? Who is it suited for?
1、 FDE是AI的“最后一公里”攻坚者
No matter how smart a large model is, it doesn't understand your company's specific business scenarios. FDEs exist to solve exactly this problem.
They're not pure programmers, not salespeople, and not customer support — they're a three-in-one role:
FDE = engineer who understands technology + product manager who understands requirements + delivery expert who can work on-site
Tencent's recruitment site puts it plainly: "Go deep into industry scenarios, break down vague requirements into executable technical roadmaps, lead requirements analysis, technology selection, and architecture design, and deliver actionable AI solutions."
Shanghai Innovation Institute put it even more precisely when launching the training program: they are both understanders of technology and translators of requirements; both extensions of R&D and champions of implementation.
In plain terms: stop letting AI be just a "showpiece" and make it actually get real work done for enterprises.
2. How Hot Is This Role? Just Look at the Money
LinkedIn data shows that over the past two years, companies added at least 1.3 million AI-related roles, with FDE being the fastest-growing.
Domestic examples:
- ByteDance is hiring a "Doubao AI Large Model FDE" with a monthly salary of 35,000–70,000 RMB, 15 months' pay per year, up to 1.05 million annually.
- Ant Digital Technologies is hiring a B2B FDE at 40,000–60,000 RMB per month, also 15 months' pay.
- Zhipu AI is hiring an FDE lead at 60,000–80,000 RMB per month.
- Tencent has opened FDE positions in both Wuhan and Shenzhen.

Silicon Valley is even more extreme:
- OpenAI offers FDEs $162,000–$280,000 a year (about 1.1–1.9 million RMB), plus equity.
- Anthropic goes even higher: $200,000–$300,000 (about 1.36–2.03 million RMB).
Global FDE job postings grew 800% year-over-year in 2025 alone.
Now even traditional companies are hiring FDEs — building their own teams and implementing AI in-house.
3、 为什么大厂急需这个岗位?
The logic is actually quite simple.
Large model competition used to be about "who has more parameters and higher benchmark scores." But that's changed — model capabilities are converging, and everyone's roughly at the same level.
Tan Yinliang, a professor at CEIBS, said something I find spot-on: "Technical leadership is becoming the entry ticket. What really determines who wins the second half is whether you can turn models into productivity systems for enterprises."
In plain language: having a good gun isn't enough — you need someone to teach customers how to fight with it.
Big tech companies have discovered a problem: many enterprises bought AI but have no idea how to integrate it with their business. How to feed the data? How to change the processes? How should employees use it? It's all a minefield.
If you only sell APIs, you quickly fall into a price war — you're cheap, and I'll be cheaper. But with FDEs, you're not just selling a model; you're selling the ability to "get things done for you," and that's far more valuable.
That's why the giants are paying big money to poach people — they're fighting over those who can genuinely help customers "get things done."
4、 什么样的人适合转型FDE?
Based on Tencent's hiring requirements and industry practice, these three types of people have the best shot:
Type 1: Engineers with ToB project experience.
Tencent requires 3+ years of ToB delivery experience. When dealing with enterprise clients, requirements are always vague and complex — anyone who hasn't grinded through requirements with clients simply can't handle it.
Type 2: Technical people with product thinking.
There's a practitioner named Yasha who was originally a product manager for 8 years, then moved into development, and became an FDE two years ago. She said something I really like: the FDE role lets you fully combine a product manager's business experience with a programmer's technical skills — you don't have to give up the accumulation from either side.
In plain terms: your past work wasn't wasted — both skill sets come in handy.
Type 3: "T-shaped talent" who can work on-site and communicate well.
FDEs need to be stationed at client sites long-term. What's it like on-site? Aging equipment, workers with grievances, noisy data — all the messy problems that never appear in textbooks.
Tencent's job posting includes an interesting line: "Able to discuss ROI with non-technical executives."
Translated: you need to explain, in language bosses understand, whether AI is actually worth it.
Shanghai Innovation Institute summarized the FDE talent profile in its curriculum as: versatile talent combining technical ability, industry knowledge, and implementation experience.
It sounds a bit vague, but translated it means: can write code, understands the industry, and isn't shy about dealing with people.
5、 写在最后
For ordinary engineers and product managers, FDE may be one of our best paths to making money in the AI era.
It's hard for most of us to become top-tier algorithm engineers — that's one in ten thousand. But FDE only requires understanding business, communicating well, and knowing how to implement — all skills that can be trained.
In the future, most enterprises will need FDEs to help them implement AI. We can join big tech companies serving top clients, become in-house experts at traditional companies, or even start a small studio helping nearby SMEs deploy AI.
The market is big enough — the giants can't handle all the work themselves.
Honestly, FDE is tough work, but it will most likely pay well.
Finally
Over the past two years, the logic of internet hiring has completely changed:
Traditional development roles that only write basic business code and do CRUD work all day are shrinking, while technical people who can implement large AI models and help companies make their business intelligent have become hot commodities that big tech companies are scrambling for.
In the 2026 spring recruitment market, large model-related roles have firmly taken the #1 spot in hiring!
AI-related job postings surged 8.7x year-over-year, with their share among all new-economy roles jumping from 2.78% to 22.03%. Simply put: out of every 10 tech roles, 2 are AI large model roles.
Top tech companies are going all-in on AI for 2026 spring recruitment, while traditional roles keep shrinking
- ByteDance: 7,000 openings in spring recruitment, 4,800+ in R&D, with 70% of slots tilted toward AI development and AI products — a massive talent gap
- Tencent: expanding spring recruitment by 10,000 people, with technical roles up 36% and product roles up 39% — the expansion is centered entirely on large models
- Huawei: AI internship positions open year-round across all tracks: underlying computing infrastructure, large model application development, LLM engineers, AI data security and privacy, and more

How can I get the above materials?

Why is everyone learning about LLMs?
Recently, tech giant Intel announced layoffs of 20,000 people. Traditional positions are continuously shrinking, but AI-related technical roles are being aggressively expanded. With 3–5 years of experience, top companies can offer salaries of 50K × 20 months!

Within a year, "having AI project experience" will become a threshold for submitting your resume.

Riding this wave, rather than sitting back like a "frog in slowly boiling water" waiting to be phased out of the industry, why not get ahead of the curve by mastering LLM principles + application technologies + hands-on project experience—and turn things around with the wind at your back!
Are these materials really useful?
These materials were jointly compiled by me and Dr. Weimin Lu (Bachelor's degree from Tsinghua University in Beijing and PhD from Caltech in the US), currently CEO of Shanghai Yinpo Information Technology. The MoPaaS cloud platform he founded has received Forrester's global "Strong Performer" certification and serves 1,000+ enterprises including Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation and State Grid. He has published 50+ papers as first author in IEEE Transactions and holds 35 Chinese and US patents, including a reinforcement learning patent for NASA JPL's Mars exploration system. This LLM course was developed under the leadership of Professor Weimin Lu, a dual Tsinghua–Caltech PhD and winner of the Wu Wenjun AI Award.

The materials cover video tutorials and hands-on projects ranging from beginner to advanced. Whether you're a complete beginner or a technical professional with some foundation, these materials will absolutely help you boost your salary and transition into an LLM role.
