PCI DSS

PCI DSS is the card brands' security standard for every business that stores, processes, or transmits cardholder data. Agency's forward-deployed engineers, supercharged by AI, scope your cardholder data environment, implement the 12 requirements, and carry you through SAQ or QSA validation every year — without adding headcount.

Scanners find the gaps. Agency closes them.

Overview

PCI DSS (Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard) is the security standard that Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, and JCB require of every organization that stores, processes, or transmits cardholder data. Maintained by the PCI Security Standards Council, the current version, 4.0.1, organizes 12 requirements into six goals — from network security and protecting account data to access control, monitoring, testing, and policy.

Unlike SOC 2 or ISO 27001, PCI DSS is prescriptive: the requirements say exactly what to do, and validation is annual — a Self-Assessment Questionnaire for most merchants or a Report on Compliance by a Qualified Security Assessor for the largest, each ending in an Attestation of Compliance that your acquirer and the card brands rely on.

Most tools hand you a checklist and a scan report. Agency hands you a team: forward-deployed engineers who scope the cardholder data environment, implement the requirements, and keep the evidence current for every quarterly scan and annual assessment.

Who Needs PCI DSS

PCI DSS applies to any organization that accepts card payments or handles cardholder data on someone else's behalf — merchants of every size, payment facilitators, and the service providers that store, process, or transmit card data or can affect its security.

Retail & EcommerceOnline and in-store merchants validate every year, and ecommerce checkout pages fall under the v4.0 payment-page script and anti-skimming requirements.

Financial ServicesFintechs, issuers, processors, and payment facilitators are service providers under PCI DSS and typically validate with a QSA-led Report on Compliance.

Technology & SoftwareSaaS platforms that touch card data — or host the systems that do — need PCI DSS to satisfy acquirers, partners, and enterprise buyers.

Health & Life SciencesProviders and healthtech companies that take patient payments carry PCI DSS obligations alongside HIPAA.

Media & EntertainmentSubscription, streaming, and ticketing businesses process card data at volume and are expected to validate every year.

TransportationAirlines, logistics, and mobility platforms take payments across many channels and third parties — each of which is in scope.

Key Challenges

Seven places a PCI program stalls

Audited Compliance PCI DSS validation is annual and evidence-heavy: quarterly ASV scans, penetration tests, log reviews, access reviews, and policies all have to be current and retained for the assessor.

Fragmented Governance Payments, engineering, IT, and finance each own part of the cardholder data environment. When responsibilities aren't assigned per requirement, the gaps surface during the assessment.

Cross-Framework Complexity PCI DSS overlaps heavily with SOC 2, ISO 27001, and HIPAA. Without a shared control map, teams implement and evidence the same safeguards more than once.

Policy & Access Requirements 7 and 8 — least privilege, unique IDs, multi-factor authentication for every access into the CDE, and regular access reviews — are where assessors spend much of their time.

Insider Risks Requirement 12 expects security awareness training, screening for personnel with access to cardholder data, and an incident response plan that is tested at least once a year.

Remote Workers Call-center agents and remote staff who handle card data bring workstations, home networks, and screen-sharing tools into scope.

How Agency Delivers

Agency operates your PCI DSS program as a fully managed, continuously enforced system — from scoping and segmentation through remediation, quarterly scans, and annual validation.

CDE as a Living System — Agency doesn't scope your environment once and walk away. Agency operates the cardholder data environment continuously — maintaining segmentation, enforcing controls, reviewing access and logs, and keeping evidence current around the clock.

Scoping and Segmentation — Agency maps every payment flow, documents the systems in scope, and implements and tests the segmentation that keeps the rest of your network out of the assessment.

Requirement Implementation — Agency's U.S.-based forward-deployed engineers, supercharged by proprietary AI, enforce the 12 requirements across your cloud infrastructure, identity providers, endpoint security, and GRC platforms. Every control is validated continuously, and drift is remediated immediately.

Documentation Generation — Network and cardholder data-flow diagrams, policies, responsibility matrices, and SAQ or ROC evidence packages are generated and maintained for you. Every artifact is assessor-ready and always current.

Cross-Framework Efficiency — Agency AI maps PCI DSS requirements to SOC 2, ISO 27001, HIPAA, and other frameworks. Controls implemented for PCI DSS automatically satisfy overlapping requirements elsewhere.

Scan and Assessment Readiness — PCI DSS requires quarterly ASV scans, annual penetration testing, and annual validation. Agency keeps the program continuously compliant, so each scan and assessment confirms the status quo instead of starting a remediation cycle.
